“I am getting an education that is better than friends who are attending Ivy League schools.” - Hunter Barclay, Yeager Scholar in the Dr. Daniel P. Babb Class of 2019 “I am getting an education that is better than friends who are attending Ivy League schools,” says Hunter Barclay, a Yeager Scholar in the Dr. Daniel P. Babb Class of 2019. “It is probably the best educational experience in the country.” The Frostburg, Maryland, native was looking for scholarships that would cover tuition when he discovered the Society of Yeager Scholars program at Marshall University. “I decided to give it a shot. I kept making it through each phase of the process, and then I got the scholarship,” he says. Majoring in energy management and taking pre-med classes with aspirations of pursuing dual degrees in business and medicine, Hunter recently received the Fulbright Summer Institute Award. “I was looking for something to do this summer, and I was talking about doing mission work, but my friend recommended I look at the Fulbright program. I was drawn to this program because I’ve never been out of the country before, so it will be a neat experience. I wanted to go to Wales because it is a part of the U.K. that you don’t hear much about. I will get to study at three universities for two weeks each,” states Hunter. During his time at Cardiff University, Bangor University and Aberystwyth University, Hunter’s studies will focus on industry, politics and how the country has changed over the past two centuries. Hunter says he will miss his classmates while he is abroad this summer. “We have become a tight-knit family and I will miss the adventures we share here,” he said. Recently, the Yeager Scholars went on a field trip to South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore and the Badlands (a trip that tied into their art class), which Hunter remarks is one of his favorite opportunities the program has offered thus far. Through countless classes and events during his freshman year, Hunter says he has learned to always go the extra mile. “Donors who are contributing to the Yeager program are really making a difference,” he said. “They are part of something that is shaping students who are going to go out and change the world.” Hunter was one of three Yeager Students from Marshall University who applied for the Fulbright Summer Institute Award with the assistance of the Office of National Scholarships.
