Len spent 39 years, full time, at Marshall, where he went from professor to chair of the English Department before serving as the Dean of the Graduate College for 23 years. Judy was an Adjunct Spanish Instructor for four years. “During my tenure as Dean, Marshall became a doctoral- granting institution,” said Len. “We started the Forensic Science graduate program, which was ranked number one in the country and we vastly increased research funding.” Len served as the Coordinator of the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research. Upon retirement, the “Dr. Leonard and Judith Deutsch Graduate College Development Fund” was established in the couple’s honor. This fund supports students traveling to national conferences or workshops or faculty who are presenters at national conferences or workshops. “The presentation of faculty and student research at national conferences is a great experience for participants because it allows them to receive feedback while they hone their presentation skills,” explained Len. “It also helps put Marshall University on the map in terms of being a vital center for academic research. It enhances our reputation regionally as well as nationally.” Len and Judy are proud to have their names attached to a fund that supports student and faculty growth, as lifelong learning cannot be understated. Today, the couple encourages students to follow their dreams. “We advise students to open themselves to ideas and to follow their curiosity, wherever it may take them,” said Len. Through dedicated faculty and staff, like Len and Judy, students are able to explore academic adventures they otherwise might not afford. Providing Academic Adventures
